Valiant Charger R/T Model Overview

  • The Charger R/T was the performance model of the VH Chrysler Valiant Charger range.
  • Only 1,300 Charger R/Ts were produced
  • The Charger R/T came standard with the upgraded HP 265 218bhp Hemi Six engine and three-speed floor shift manual transmission. A four-speed manual transmission became available in June 1972. Only one automatic transmission Charger R/T was ever produced, as a special order for UK export.
  • The exterior came standard with the familiar “loud” colours, stripes, blackouts and decals. The A66 black bonnet and fender dress up package was a popular option.
  • Wheels were the same 6.5 x 14-inch styled sports rims shared with the VH Pacer and the Charger and Regal 770. ROH alloys, standard with the E38 and E49, could be optioned with the base model and later became available throughout the Chrysler range.
  • The Charger R/T shared the same basic interior as the VH Pacer, with sports instrumentation and a two-spoke sports steering wheels. A popular option was the A95 interior dress-up package, which included a three spoke sports steering wheel and better-quality reclining bucket seats.

Though most will associate Charger R/Ts with Chrysler’s legendary triple Weber Six Pack engines and racing at Bathurst NSW, the majority were built with the base 265 218bhp Hemi Six engine as seen in the production numbers.
